Is the algae harmful?
For the vast majority of visitors, no, the naturally occurring algae in the Charlotte Plains bore baths is not harmful.
It is a completely normal byproduct of warm, mineral-rich artesian water being exposed to open air and sunlight. However, there are two key things to keep in mind regarding safety and comfort:
1. Physical Slipping Hazard (Main Concern)
The primary issue with the algae is that it coats the surfaces of the rocks, soil, concrete and timber, making surfaces very slippery. However due to the constant use in season, the algae does not get much of a chance to grow with the amount of regular contact from humans. Surfaces can be worse in the off peak season due to low use and algae build up. Always enter, exit and move about with caution.
2. Skin Sensitivity & Swimming Precaution
Safe for Soaking: The green algae found in these natural thermal waters is standard, harmless plant/microscopic growth. Thousands of campers soak in the baths year-round.
Sensitive Skin / Open Wounds: If you have sensitive skin, allergies, or an open wound/cut, Charlotte Plains advises avoiding the water, as natural untreated water can cause minor irritation or infection.
